AI Data Protection

Strip, Scan, and Mask Files Before They Reach an AI Model

Files attached to AI requests carry hidden metadata, readable personal data, and sometimes malware. Maskflare strips metadata, extracts and masks document text, and can hold files for malware analysis.

The problem

A photo carries GPS coordinates and a device serial number in its metadata. A PDF carries its author and edit history. A spreadsheet attached to a prompt carries every row in it.

Most AI data protection reads only the text of the prompt and lets files through as opaque blobs, which is where the most data leaves.

How Maskflare File Security works

Files in AI requests pass three optional stages. Metadata is stripped from images, PDFs, and Office documents. Text is extracted from documents and masked with the same rules as the prompt. And the malware gate can analyse each file before the request is forwarded, blocking it if the file is flagged, or if analysis doesn't finish in time.

Benefits

Metadata stripping

EXIF, XMP, and IPTC in JPEG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC images; document info in PDFs; and Office document properties.

Document text masking

Text in PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, HTML, and e-mail files is extracted and checked; plain text, CSV, TSV, JSON, and Markdown are masked in place.

Malware gate

Static analysis of executables, Office and PDF files, shortcuts, and scripts, with recursive unpacking of archives.

Blocks when unsure

By default, a file that can't be analysed in time is blocked rather than forwarded.

Capabilities

Limits

Up to 32 MiB per file and 16 files per request.

Configuration

Metadata stripping is on by default; document text masking and the malware gate are turned on per organization.

Frequently asked questions

Which file types does Maskflare read?

Text is extracted from PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, HTML, and e-mail files; plain text, CSV, TSV, JSON, and Markdown are masked in place.

Does Maskflare remove photo location data?

Yes. Metadata stripping removes EXIF, XMP, and IPTC data, including GPS coordinates, from JPEG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC images.

Is the malware gate antivirus?

It's Maskflare's own analysis service: file identification, recursive unpacking, static analysers, and detection rules. It isn't a signature-based antivirus product.

Is text inside images masked?

No. Maskflare doesn't run OCR, so text that appears only in an image isn't detected.
