Microsoft Purview DSPM for AI alternative for mixed AI vendors

Maskflare EngineeringPublished 6 min read

Short answer

Purview DSPM for AI is the natural choice if your AI use is mostly Microsoft 365 Copilot, because it's built into your tenant. For other AI apps it needs pay-as-you-go billing and usually the browser extension and device onboarding, and the documented actions are audit, warn and block. Choose Maskflare when you use several AI vendors and need values masked and restored.

Most companies that run Microsoft 365 already own part of Purview, so it's the first thing someone suggests when the question of AI data leaks comes up. For Copilot that's often the right answer. The harder question comes when the marketing team uses ChatGPT, engineering uses Claude and Cursor, and the product team is building on the Gemini API.

Maskflare wrote this page. We're comparing against Microsoft's own documentation, and we'd rather you keep Purview where it's the better tool.

What is Purview DSPM for AI?

Data Security Posture Management for AI is the part of Microsoft Purview that shows how AI is used in your organization and applies Purview controls to it. For Microsoft 365 Copilot, it draws on sensitivity labels, audit, eDiscovery, retention and Insider Risk Management in your tenant, and Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Copilot experiences aren't charged.

For other AI apps, the setup changes. Microsoft's guide to other AI apps says these capabilities need pay-as-you-go billing, and that most need the Purview browser extension and onboarded devices. Network data security through a SASE or SSE partner and direct integration in Edge are the documented exceptions.

Coverage varies by control. The supported sites list is very long and includes ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Cursor. But the same guide restricts communication compliance, eDiscovery and retention to Edge and four named apps, and sensitivity labels aren't supported for third-party AI apps. Microsoft's AI agents page marks ChatGPT Enterprise and Claude Enterprise agents as unsupported for most protections.

Who should choose Purview?

  • Your AI use is mostly Microsoft 365 Copilot. Label-based controls apply to Copilot, and the experience is part of your tenant.
  • You already run Purview DLP, Insider Risk and eDiscovery. AI interactions join the same audit and investigation workflows your compliance team knows.
  • You need interactions retained for eDiscovery. Purview can capture prompts and responses into the user's mailbox for compliance. Maskflare deliberately stores neither, so it can't give you that record.
  • You want one vendor. One contract, one admin center, and a long list of sites to report on.
  • You need sensitivity labels to drive AI access. Label-based controls for Copilot are Purview's own territory.

Who should choose Maskflare?

  1. You want the task to continue. The Purview actions documented for third-party AI apps are audit, classify, warn or block, and retention. We couldn't find masking in those docs. Maskflare swaps values for tokens and restores them in the answer.
  2. You mix AI vendors. The same rules apply to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Perplexity, Mistral Le Chat and Microsoft 365 Copilot on the web, and to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral, xAI, DeepSeek, Groq, Together AI and Ollama through the gateway.
  3. You build your own AI apps. Microsoft documents a Purview SDK for Entra-registered apps. Maskflare is a drop-in gateway: change the base URL, with no code around each call.
  4. Your fleet isn't only Windows. Microsoft's guide describes endpoint DLP for these sites on onboarded Windows computers. Maskflare's desktop agent runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
  5. You want coding agents and MCP covered now. Hooks for Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot CLI and VS Code agent mode, and an MCP route that masks arguments and results. We couldn't confirm equivalent coverage on the Microsoft pages we read.
  6. You want predictable costs for this control. Maskflare doesn't depend on a per-use meter in your Azure subscription. Compare both on your own volumes.

Purview DSPM for AI vs Maskflare, feature by feature

Purview details from Microsoft Learn as of 3 November 2026. Microsoft 365 Copilot has different and generally fuller coverage.

Should you replace Purview or add Maskflare?

For most Microsoft 365 customers, add rather than replace. Keep Purview for Copilot, labels, retention and eDiscovery, and use Maskflare for non-Microsoft AI and your own apps. One thing to plan for: if Purview warns or blocks at the point of paste, a user may never reach the masking step, so decide which control owns which app before you turn on both. Test that in a pilot, because we haven't published a tested joint configuration.

How do you add Maskflare next to Purview?

  1. Use the DSPM reports. Take the AI apps Purview shows in use, and rank them by sensitive interactions. Those are your first targets.
  2. Choose owners by app. Copilot stays with Purview. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and the rest go to Maskflare.
  3. Map sensitive information types to detectors. For each type your DLP policies use, find the Maskflare detector, or add a dictionary or custom regex.
  4. Pick a compliance profile. HIPAA Safe Harbor, GDPR (EU/EEA), UK GDPR, PCI DSS v4.0, US PII (CCPA/CPRA) and Swiss nDSG health data give you a baseline in one click. Start in alert mode.
  5. Deploy with the tools you already have. The desktop agent self-enrolls from managed settings through Intune.
  6. Connect your identity provider and SIEM. Microsoft Entra ID, Okta and Google Workspace for sign-in, and Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel, Slack, Microsoft Teams, PagerDuty and any HTTPS endpoint for events.

What Maskflare doesn't do

  • It doesn't apply or read Microsoft sensitivity labels, and it isn't an eDiscovery or retention tool. It doesn't keep prompts at all.
  • It isn't part of your Microsoft agreement, so it's another vendor to approve.
  • AI app discovery and coaching dialogs need the desktop agent on managed devices; personal phones and unmanaged laptops are out of reach.
  • Prompt-injection detection runs on MCP tool results and tool listings, not on chat prompts, and there's no topic filtering.
  • SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 audits are in progress. If you need a finished report today, factor that in.

Sources and how we checked

Based on public information as of November 3, 2026. Maskflare wrote this page, and vendors change their products, so check anything that matters with the vendor. “Not publicly documented” means we couldn't find it, not that the product lacks it. If something here is wrong, tell us and we'll correct it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Purview DSPM for AI need pay-as-you-go billing?

For AI apps other than Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft's guide says yes. Microsoft 365 Copilot experiences aren't charged. Check the billing page for your own usage.

Do I need the Purview browser extension?

For most capabilities on third-party sites in browsers, yes, along with onboarded devices. Direct integration in Edge and network-based data security through a SASE or SSE partner are the documented exceptions.

Does Purview mask prompts sent to ChatGPT?

The docs we read describe warning or blocking and don't describe masking for third-party AI apps. Confirm with Microsoft, because this area changes quickly.

Do sensitivity labels work with ChatGPT or Claude?

Microsoft's table for other AI apps marks sensitivity labels as unsupported. Label-based controls are a Microsoft 365 Copilot strength.

Can Maskflare replace Purview entirely?

Usually not. Purview covers data security and compliance across Microsoft 365, far beyond AI. Maskflare covers AI traffic: apps, people and agents.

Does Maskflare work with Intune and Entra ID?

Yes. The desktop agent deploys through Intune, and Entra ID is supported for single sign-on and provisioning.
