A VPN alternative is an access model that replaces network-level remote access with something narrower — typically zero trust network access, which connects a user to a specific application rather than to the network segment it lives on.
The motivation is structural more than it's about performance: a VPN's core design grants broad network reach after a single authentication, which is exactly the property that turns one compromised credential into a lateral-movement incident.
