What Is Bot Mitigation?

Bot mitigation is the practice of detecting automated, non-human traffic to a website, application, or API, and applying a policy to it — allow, challenge, or block — separately from how real human visitors are treated.

Not all bots are malicious; search engine crawlers and monitoring services are automated traffic an operator usually wants. Effective mitigation distinguishes wanted automation from scraping, credential stuffing, checkout bots, and API abuse, rather than treating all non-human traffic identically.
